Vax Too Ineffective to Curb COVID Spread in California: 6 Million Cases

California’s high vaccination rate of 84% does nothing to stop the state’s now record-level Covid-19 cases, raising questions about the vaccine’s efficacy.

  • More than 6 million cumulative coronavirus cases have now been reported in California, according to data compiled by The LA Times, as the vaccine is proving ineffective to slow the Omicron variant’s record-smashing race across the state.
  • The Times reports the Golden State logged 308,820 new infections, “a colossal figure that includes data from both Saturday and Sunday.”
  • Los Angeles County reported more than 225,000 new Covid-19 cases over the last week, including its three highest single-day totals of the entire pandemic.
  • County health officials announced the latest record: 45,584, on Sunday.
  • The large totals among the state’s highly-vaccinated population are likely an undercount, officials say, “as they don’t include many of those who may have self-diagnosed using an at-home test,” The Times notes.
  • But California is also suffering a sharp rise in hospitalizations, while as of Sunday, 11,048 coronavirus-positive patients were hospitalized statewide, “more than triple the number a month ago,” The Times also notes.
  • The rise in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in California raises questions about the vaccine’s efficacy, especially considering 84% of the state’s population is vaccinated, 66.9% fully, according to Google data.
  • Moreover, California is the most vaccinated state in the U.S., at 67.6 million doses, also according to Google data, casting more doubt on the jabs’ effectiveness.

  • “A certain proportion of a large volume of cases, no matter what, are going to be severe,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House’s top medical advisor, while nearly three-quarters of the U.S. population has been vaccinated, 62.5% fully, says Google data.
  • Dr. Mark Ghaly, California’s health and human services secretary, recently said that California’s hospital census was approaching levels seen a year ago, according to The Times, even though the number of coronavirus-positive patients remains far lower.
  • “We are worried about the total hospital census. We are worried with the level of staff infections and the need for isolation and quarantine among the staff,” said Ghaly.
  • California recorded its 5 millionth coronavirus case a little less than two months ago.
  • On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom responded to Omicron’s spread across his highly-vaccinated state by deploying the California National Guard to support COVID-testing sites throughout the state.
