5G Tax Applied to Smartphones Despite Slower Speeds and Increasing 5G Opposition, Bans, and Moratoriums

By B.N. Frank

Just last month, PC Magazine advised Verizon phone users to turn off and/or disable 5G due to slow speed. In September, it was reported that AT&T’s 5G was slower than 4G in almost every city where it was tested.  In 2019, there were reports of T-Mobile 5G phones overheating and catching fire.

Additionally, cities worldwide AND entire countries have taken action to ban, delay, halt, and limit 5G installation AS WELL AS issue moratoriums due to health, safety, environmental and economic risks.  American opposition to 5G continues to increase for a variety of reasons and has been the topic of “Dilbert” cartoons. A petition boycotting 5G phones has also been endorsed by doctors and scientists worldwide.

Nevertheless, the insidious “Race to 5G” continues where it hasn’t been banned.  Adding insult to injury – a tax was applied to U.S. smartphones for it.

From Gizmodo:

2020 was supposed to be 5G’s big coming out party. The year people used 5G to order food from their seats at stadiums, the year people used 5G to stream movies from the cloud, and most importantly, the year when a lot of people would finally have access to 5G on a shiny new smartphone.

Unfortunately, due in large part to a certain virus, things didn’t turn out that way. Instead, people spent much more time inside, relying on home broadband and wifi to serve up the internet, sometimes leaving mobile networks underutilized and underappreciated. This meant the ongoing development of cellular 5G networks and all the possibilities 5G promises to unlock felt like even more bluster than normal, which is impressive coming from an industry that routinely tries to pump up the benefit of its services. There’s really no other way to say, 5G was a tax on smartphones in 2020.

In terms of speed, the numbers are pretty clear. For those who have access to sub-6Ghz or 2.5GHz 5G (which makes up a large part of T-Mobile’s 5G network), I’ve found that 5G increases mobile data speeds by around 15 to 20%. It’s a nice boost during times when you are out and about, but it’s not exactly a game changer, and the improved speeds aren’t something you really notice on a day-to-day basis.
